A Student Perspective

“When I got a concussion while skiing for the first time, having a trained nurse with our program made the situation immensely better. Being injured in a country that I had never been in without my family was terrifying at first, but the nurse was trained on how to destress this situation and was great at communicating with me and my parents.”

— Rachel Hill

“Our program’s nurse helped me get the right medicine when I was sick in a foreign country with no doctor, and it allowed me to get better very quickly! I was so thankful to have a nurse on my study abroad trip in times of uncertainty and he was very helpful!”

— Tristin Carpenter

“When Struck with a panic attack, the presence of a trained nurse was the comfort I needed. It made all the difference in that moment because they knew exactly how to speak with me, be present with me and guide me. They were a voice of reason and comfort during a stressful situation away from home.”

— Blue Billingsly

“Having a nurse working with your study abroad program is like having a health superhero by your side. They were able to give medical advice and take care of you in emergencies, all while keeping you safe with the feeling of having someone you trust. This helped me be stress free and have an amazing experience abroad without any health worries.”

— Michael Newman

A Parent Perspective

““Having a sick child overseas is an extremely stressful situation, especially as a parent who had to stay behind with our family while my spouse traveled to be with our son in the hospital. Being more that 5,000 miles from my wife and son created a deep sense of helplessness, but knowing that we had an engaged, healthcare professional walking alongside them was not only helpful; it was invaluable.”

— Wesley Walls

“When our son signed up for his university’s study abroad program, I never imagined that he would end up extremely ill in a hospital in Paris with a rare and very serious respiratory infection. We were very fortunate that the program assistant for his university was also an experienced travel nurse, who was able to help us navigate this very stressful situation.

I traveled to Paris as quickly as possible and having the nurse meet me at the airport to help me find the hospital was a big relief after coming off a long flight. The nurse was able to help me navigate the testing and protocol for the hospital and gathered information from the doctor in charge of my son’s care.

Having someone in person to help understand test results and other medical information and offer encouragement was extremely helpful during a very stressful time, especially when the hospital stay lasted much longer than we expected. Emotional support plays a big role in helping a patient heal physically, and having a nurse with me in person giving me encouragement and advice about how I could best support my son while his body was trying to heal physically was very helpful to me.

The nurse was with us after my son’s discharge from hospital and helped us get prescriptions filled at pharmacy and arrange transportation to airport once we were cleared to come home.

As a mom, I wanted to do anything and everything I could to get my son well and back home as quickly as possible. It was such a blessing to our family to have a nurse with me to help navigate a stressful situation in an unfamiliar country.”

— Traci Walls

A Director Perspective

“As a director, I couldn’t think of a better resource to have available. Having a nurse freed up my time and gave me the ability to focus on providing the best study abroad experience for our students.”

— Robert Shackelford
